When you are having one of those days where everything seems to be dimly lit, sometimes it helps to see that there is still light at the end of the tunnel. For those who don’t know me, I work security at a theme park. It might seem to some like ‘oh it’s just a security job’ but for me that isn’t the case. The team I work with is more or less the first responders of the park and we wear a few different masks. Sometimes we don’t even know the roles we need until we get to the call.
The other day was very busy at the park. There were lots of people and it was hot outside. The heat offers several medical calls. As soon as one call finished, I was being sent to another call. It was a constant stream of calls that I didn’t really have time to stop and take care of myself. I wasn’t my first priority.
I finished the day worn out and exhausted from the heat. I still had to go to work the next day and the next. It’s not something I think about. As the days grew on, I still wasn’t taking care of myself like I should have been. I felt a tap on my shoulder. It was one of the employees. She handed me a cup of water and gave me a hug. It took me a moment to realize who she was in uniform. She was someone I had taken care of a few days back. “Take care of yourself, so you can take care of others who need you.” Those words hit me hard today. She’s right though. These are words of wisdom that I pass onto you. Take care of yourself.
